Two Claws Up!

I am in the midst of reading a debut novel by Tom Rob Smith entitled: Child 44

I'm 3/4Th's of the way through the book and I must say, it's amazing!

It's a murder mystery/thriller set in post war Soviet Russia. The time when Stalin reigned.

It was a time when everyone was fed the lie that under Stalin's rule--everyone was taken care of. There was no crime. Lives were good.

The horrible reality was that everyone lived under tremendous fear of the government. Every action was under scrutiny and you could be labeled a traitor for something as small as casual conversation with friends or strangers. Poverty ruled. Supplies were lean. Torture and execution was an every day occurrence.

It's in this setting that a serial killer is running rampant. The dilemma is, how can people be warned if one could be arrested for admitting there is crime occurring under the glorious Russian rule?

This book has so many twists and turns I find myself reading it slowly so that I can wring every drop of literary goodness out of it.

If you're looking for a book that will immerse you into another world, I highly recommend Child 44.

Hey Laochie, I thought of you when writing this review. I know how you're always hunting for a new book to devour :) I really think you'll like this one! It's amazing that it's this guys first novel! I'm hoping that he hasn't put all of his talent into a one book wonder and we see more of his writing later on...
